Good evening! Tonight we kick off the 2009 mixtape.
Every day for the next 20 days, we’ll post one song from the mixtape (curated by Daniel), and comments about each song from Daniel my guest commentator, Truitt.
As a point of clarification: I didn’t chose these songs to say they’re the best twenty tracks of 2009, but instead, as a cross-section of music from 2009 - the high points, the low points, and the weird-as-hell points.
And please, reblog and become a part of the discussion in the comments.
Mike celebrated 24 yesterday.
Festivities included:
birthday balloons
burrito
beverage @ Nina’s
beer
bbq
Yes, that is right. I took the risk and made my first bbq ribs for a southern boy on his birthday AND HE LIKED THEM! I was fretting about those, but after heading to Morelli’s Meat Market and getting some suggestions I knew I had to make them and follow through with my plan. I tossed the ribs and sauce I made into the crock pot, along with a few spicy little peppers, and let it cook for about 7 hours.
Most importantly, Mike had a good birthday and was excited about it.
We’re what separates the heart from the heartless. We’ll keep pushing forward regardless.
I love my parents. My dad just called after hearing I had kind of a rough day after locking my keys in my car and said, “I know it’s crummy and not fun when that happens but try to remember you have a family that loves you and keep in mind the positives when you are feeling down.”
My parents are so smart and right about many things.

I can’t be the only person who got absolutely none of their to-do list done today right? Of course, I never put “enjoy this stupidly magnificent weather” on the list.
Put it on your list and cross it off, that is what I would say.
By the way, I think I know you! Well kinda, you came into Nina’s today and I was working. I’m Stephie. :D
Listening to Fall Out Boy, that’s right, to be honest I don’t know why I chose it. Maybe it’s good cleaning music, although I do enjoy the Roxanne cover. This is one of those bands that Mike got me to secretly like, some of it, at least. I do like pop, I suppose, so it is fitting.
But now I turned on Feist and that has always been excellent cleaning music.
I have always thought of art as an extension of who I am; it acts as not only a personal narrative of my life but as a release. A reciprocal relationship in a sense.
I sit down, clear my mind, and create without thought. It helps me understand more about myself and my history. Whether it is a journal entry, a sketch, or a finished piece often times I will not comprehend the true nature or purpose of my pieces until later on. It makes much more sense to me when I am outside of that moment. Someone very important in my life often told me that “Steph, you just don’t know what you don’t know. So stop trying.”
Some pieces are finished, some are not, and some have just never been decided on.
Mike’s birthday is this month, the 18th. I know Nina’s will be on the stop list; I am excited to plan a good night. Oh OH I should start my present.
